Privacy notice.

This site is run by me personally, not by a company. This notice explains what personal data I collect through it, why, and what you can do about it.

Last updated: 21 July 2026

Who is responsible for your data

I am the data controller for this website: Dale McDermott, an individual based in London, United Kingdom. You can reach me at dale@dalemcdermott.com about anything in this notice. As I am an individual rather than a company, there is no company number or registered office to quote.

What I collect

I have deliberately kept this to a minimum. There is no account system, and no e-commerce.

  • Analytics data. If, and only if, you accept cookies, Google Analytics collects information about your visit: pages viewed, approximate location (derived from a truncated IP address), device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. I use this in aggregate; I do not try to identify individual visitors.
  • Anything you send me. If you email me, or use one of the contact links, I will hold your message and email address for as long as needed to deal with it and keep a sensible record of our correspondence.
  • Newsletter email address. If you subscribe, your email address is stored in a private Google Sheet that only I can access, so I can tell you when I publish something new. I don't use a third-party newsletter platform, and I don't share the list.

I do not collect special category data, I do not run advertising or profiling, and I do not sell or share your data with anyone for their own marketing.

Why I am allowed to process it (lawful basis)

  • Analytics cookies: consent. Nothing is set until you opt in, and you can change your mind at any time.
  • Newsletter: consent. You ask to receive it, and you can unsubscribe at any time by replying to any email.
  • Correspondence: legitimate interests. If you contact me, it is reasonable for me to read and reply to you, and to keep a record of that exchange.

How long I keep it

Analytics data is retained for up to 14 months. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful to the working relationship, and then deleted.

Who else is involved

A few service providers process data on my behalf: my website host, my email provider, Google (for the newsletter Sheet, and for Analytics where consented). Some of these are based outside the UK/EEA, including in the United States. Where that is the case, transfers rely on the safeguards those providers put in place, such as the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Embedded content, such as the Spotify player and YouTube videos on the podcast page, is served by those platforms. When it loads, they may set their own cookies and receive your IP address, governed by their privacy policies rather than mine.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask me to: give you a copy of the data I hold about you; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to how I use it; or provide it in a portable format. Where I rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Email dale@dalemcdermott.com and I will respond within one month.

If you think I have got something wrong, please tell me first, but you are entitled to complain directly to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or to your own national supervisory authority if you are in the EEA.

Changes

If this notice changes materially, I will update the date at the top of the page.
